Finally: The Horizontal Dock

Horizontal Dock
At CES, Henge Docks unveiled a new, groundbreaking Horizontal Docking Station for Apple notebook computers featuring support for up to three external displays, access to 14 ports, and a solid metal chassis. With automatic docking and optional expansion software, the Horizontal Dock sets a new standard in convenience and versatility for users of MacBook computers. We know people have been waiting a long time for a solution like this, ourselves included!
A high precision, four‐point positioning system effortlessly aligns the computer during docking for a smooth switch to a desktop workstation. With the touch of a button, the electronic docking and undocking process takes under two seconds! The Horizontal Dock for the MacBook Pro with Retina Display can connect three external displays, six USB 3.0 peripherals, two audio devices, an Ethernet connection, an SD Card, a FireWire 800 device and power. The Horizontal Dock’s dual audio ports enable users to switch between multiple audio input and output devices directly from OS X. No more swapping plugs between headphones and external speakers!

The Horizontal Docking Station is available for no-commitment preorder through Henge Docks’ online store for the 11-inch and 13-inch MacBook Air, as well as the 13-inch and 15‐inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display. The Horizontal Docking Station will be priced starting at $249. A Thunderbolt enabled version of the Horizontal Docking Station will start at $349.

I have the horizontal dock with my 13" Macbook Pro and it is not charging the battery at all. It says “plugged in” and “battery not charging” – that can’t be right… Help!

  • Henge Docks says...

@Timothy – we do apologize for the delay. We’ve been frustrated as well. But the Horizontal Dock will be released very soon, in conjunction with CES 2015. We’re very busy ramping up for release!

Your announced release dates have all passed. You are either lying to us about this product, or simply not capable of bringing it to market. I asked for an ACTUAL release date, which you did not supply, but boasted the Horizontal Dock would be featured at CES 2014 – as it has been in years past at other events. CES 2014 has come and gone. Which leads the frustrated customer to assume that you yourselves do not even have a timeline for this product. Are you even in production? If you are not, the Horizontal is at least a year away and specs for the MacBook pro will have changed – so you will have to design a whole new product. Why won’t you be honest with us obviously eager customers about where you are in the development timeline?

Woold like to know if the vents on the horizontal docks left/right looks good but to what extent it would help to relax the overheating.
As the platform on which the Macbook rest on the dock is a whole dock without any holes or pockets to dissipate the heat through the vents below.
Second if u could get inside a cooling fan as there is already vents on the dock, that would be a great dock product with cooling as i haven’t seen any such product out there and this would add an extra feature to the Horizontal dock station.

Congratulations. It’s worthwhile waiting. I ’am only wondering if the Horizontal Docking Station is not shorten the battery life of MacBook Pro with Retina Display?

    With Kind Regards,

I cannot believe this is the dock I have been waiting almost a year for. I (as I am sure most of your FORMER customers) wanted a dock like the ones you currently offer for the other MacBook Pros to use with my Retina Display MBP. They are sleek and reduce clutter on my desk. This thing takes up MORE space than my MacBook Pro, and is WAY more expensive than your regular docks. I do not want a port replicator – I just want a DOCK. Totally missed the mark on this one. Not only is this the wrong product, but you have also made former customers wait for nothing. You have lost my business and I will not recommend your products ever again.

What a neat design! I like this dock and I am eager to see how it performs with the multiple monitors and swipping between desktops. It seems to me that Apple has some improvement they could make in OSX for multi-monitor setups.

I am curious to the electronic dock it in action too.

I was getting all excited, but my enthusiasm was doused slightly when I read it won’t be available till Q3 or Q4. I guess we need to wait for perfection. I’ll keep checking back!

Will there be a dock for us pre retina display owners or will the focus be only on the retina display? After studying the connection on the retina laptops they are identical to mine except the fact i have usb 2 and not usb 3 but usb 3 is backward compatible. So will it work with 2012 none retina Mac book Pro?

Why is it that all of these options require your device to NOT be inside a protective case? The whole idea is that you’re using a mobile system and when you’re mobile, you protect your $2500 investment… I was super excited to see a built in USB 3.0 hub + Thunderbolt hub + Ethernet… but was let down that I would not be able to use the product with my Speck case… There’s no way I’d take my shinny MBPr 15" out of it’s case just to dock it… Now I’m left to dream of the same unit as a standalone hub, or a station that supports cases… again I’m sadly disappointed.

    Hi Pallu,
The small footprint of a vertical dock is a big/necessary appeal for me, looking forward to seeing it.

I was hoping the horizontal dock would support the HDMI out, as on first glance a horizontal dock seems to be the only way to do that. I am sure there is a reason it was excluded from the design?

Great work guys thank you for putting the effort in making docks for us mac users.

Wow, how many of us are still waiting on a vertical dock for the rMBP? The single most appealing thing about Henge Docks are the space they save, and yet the only dock on the horizon takes up more space than the rMBP does by itself. 8 months in and still not even a projected date. It’s almost like you guys don’t want to make money.

    Hi Pallu

This is going to be a silly question but do these docks have the ability to connect to three non-apple (i.e Dell or something similar) displays? Or are only Apple displays supported?

Will the dock be compatible with the mbp 2012 – non retina

    On March 17, 2014

  • Andrew says...

If you connect multiple monitors are they each seen as discrete displays? I’ve seen commonly with other multi monitor solutions they are managed as one large (wide) resolution (i.e. 3840×1080). I’m really hoping the Henge dock would see them as 2x 1920×1080 displays.

Also could you run two or three 2560×1440 displays?

    On March 17, 2014

  • Pallu says...

Thanks Scott – we will have more info to release about these products later in the year.

    On March 17, 2014

  • Scott says...

I would strongly suggest a non-retina model for 13 and 15’ models. The corporate market is saturated with these models and a functional dock such as this has been a pipe dream for years. The vertical solution does not match the quality of the apple products you place in them, but this one seems to.

We have cutouts on the design where the vents are and exhaust through the back so overheating should not be an issue!

What about heat? Is the horizontal version prepared to deal with heat ? Or the design simply doesn’t care about it – trusting the counter-heat system of the macbook itself) ?

    late to the party but…

Can you imagine how difficult it would be for a vendor to account for the dozens of different cases there are for a single model of macbook pro? What you’re asking for is insane.
